In a stunning move, the Broncos released outside linebacker Randy Gregory earlier today.
The move is being described as a mutual decision. Gregory and newly released cornerback Essang Bassey were both benched to start the game against the Bears on Sunday.
Gregory is owed close to 11 million dollars for the rest of this season. The Broncos attempted to trade him over the past week or so but couldn’t find any takers. Broncos head coach Sean Payton, according to 9News reporter Mike Klis, slept on the decision and ultimately felt it was more important to part ways with Gregory immediately.
Gregory’s initial deal in free agency with the Broncos totaled around 70 million dollars. In that free agency period, the Broncos decided on Gregory rather than a push to bring back Von Miller.
In ten total games with the Broncos, Gregory collected a measly three sacks.
Frank Clark, who was picked up in free agency after successful years in Kansas City, is expected to be healthy and returning soon. In addition, Nik Bonnito and Jonathan Cooper have established themselves as starters while Baron Browning is due to return in a few weeks.
The red flags surrounding Gregory appear to have significant merit. It can only be looked at as a bust of a deal for General Manager George Paton.
